Applying for a Stamp 1G Extension? Here’s What No One Tells You (But Should!)
If your Stamp 1G is about to expire, we can help you apply for an extension of 6 to 12 months. This will give you more time to secure a job eligible for a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit. However, we can only prepare your application within 6 to 8 weeks of your current Stamp 1G expiring.
While the official guidelines are out there, what really makes a difference is how well you prepare your application—and how confidently you tell your story.
Here’s a guide to the less obvious (but crucial!) things you need to know, based on both expert insight and real applicant experiences.
What’s the Stamp 1G Extension Really About?
The Stamp 1G extension isn’t automatic—it’s discretionary, meaning an immigration officer decides based on the strength of your case. The initial extension is usually 6 months, but depending on your situation, you might be eligible for a second extension of up to 12 months.
But here’s the key: you must show real effort toward employment or an employment permit. Vague intentions or missing documents? That could mean a rejection—without any right to appeal.
Your Cover Letter: More Than Just a Formality
Think of your cover letter as your voice in the room. It’s where you:
- Explain why you’re applying
- Show how seriously you’re job hunting
- Mention upcoming interviews or pending permit applications
- Share timelines or expected outcomes
Avoid copying generic templates. Be personal, honest, and direct. Make your story count.
Documents You Must Include (Yes, All of Them!)
- A full, valid copy of your passport
- Front and back of your IRP card
- Proof of address (e.g., utility bill, lease, landlord letter)
- Financial evidence
- Medical insurance
- Your cover letter
- Proof of academic history
Renew your IRP Card online by using ISD portal and pay 300 Euros GNIB fees
How Long Will It Take?
Once we submit your application, the current waiting time can be up to 2 months. Once your application is submitted and approved, the Department of Justice will write a letter informing you of the extension duration.
A Word of Caution
Many applications are rejected due to:
- Weak or missing documents
- Lack of explanation for the extension
- Submitting vague or generic letters
And remember: you cannot appeal a rejection. You’ll need to start over—which could mean more months of uncertainty.
