Changes to citizenship for people granted International Protection
Following recent Government approval for key policy updates and legislative changes on international protection and citizenship, a new residency requirement will take effect from Monday, 8 December 2025.
- People granted International Protection must generally have five years of reckonable residence in the State before they can apply for citizenship.
Applications submitted before 8 December 2025 will continue to be assessed under the previous three-year residency rule. Any applications lodged on or after 8 December 2025 will be processed according to the new five-year requirement.
At expertconsultants.ie, we continue to monitor these developments closely and are available to guide applicants through the updated process.
